In the east of Scandinavia stretches a mosaic of water and forest: Finland. Just five million people live on an area the size of Germany. In the forests near the Russian border, there are still animals today that have long since been driven out of populated areas: Brown bears and wolves roam the swamps, the rare gliding squirrels inhabit old woodpecker cavities. Until the 18th century, Finns worshipped bears as deities. It is still a national symbol. Where bears feel at home, wolves can also live - in a pack they dare to kill a brown bear for its prey. Filmed in HD for the first time: wild Finnish lynx, courtship and mating behaviour of gliding squirrels, black woodpecker den from four different angles, courtship of star divers in super slow motion, female bear skilfully protects her cubs in an encounter with a threatening male.
